Since its inception, hip-hop has given birth to dozens of subgenres, each with its own distinct sound and
style. Trap, for example, is characterized by its heavy use of 808 drums and synth melodies, while grime
is defined by its dark, aggressive lyrics and hard-hitting beats. Then there’s gangsta rap, which emerged
in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was defined by its graphic depictions of violence, drug use, and
other criminal activity. And of course, we can’t forget about rap rock (or nu metal), which fused hip-hop
with elements of rock and metal to create a truly unique sound. Then there’s crunk, a high-energy style
of rap originating in the South that’s defined by its danceable beats and party-centric lyrics. And finally,
there’s mumble rap, a more recent subgenre that’s defined by its focus on flow and delivery over lyrical
content. Each of these subgenres has helped to shape the sound of hip-hop as we know it today. One
such young, definitive artist, is Young Shiloh, with his breakout EP release, “Ricochet”.
Being 27 years old from Richmond, VA, Young Shiloh has already accomplished a great deal and still has
more to do. He studied mass communications at VSU then moved on to ODU to finish his
communications degree. He is looking forward to getting his bachelor’s degree soon. He will soon have
my bachelor’s degree! Not only is this artist finishing up school, but he is also focused on making his
music. His music is versatile and different, incorporating different elements of hip-hop, club bounce
music, R&B, and trap music. This allows him to fill his verses with different flows and punchlines.
This artist takes pride in being authentic and true to himself, something that differentiates him from the
pack! Take a listen and see for yourself!
