DaJunior Talks Pain Music, Survival, and Pennsylvania’s Sound | Problematic The Podcast

North Philly’s DaJunior (1900_JR) doesn’t speak in clichés. On the latest episode of Problematic The Podcast, the Nicetown artist delivers a raw, unfiltered breakdown of his life, his music, and the pain that shaped both—making a bold claim along the way: Pennsylvania makes the best pain music.

From the jump, DaJunior walks listeners through the origin of his name, grounding it in family, identity, and purpose. Raised in Nicetown with deep Jamaican roots, he grew up around music early—but the path wasn’t guaranteed. Like many artists from his environment, he stood at a crossroads between the streets and the studio. The episode traces the exact moment he chose music fully, not as a hobby, but as a lifeline.

That choice was tested in ways most never experience. DaJunior opens up about coming home after being shot seven times, a moment that could’ve ended everything—but instead sharpened his focus. The pain didn’t disappear; it transformed. That transformation is at the core of his sound, the reason his records cut so deep, and why he believes Pennsylvania artists deliver pain differently: lived-in, unpolished, and honest.

When asked what type of music he does best, DaJunior doesn’t hesitate—pain records. He explains his studio process in detail: beat selection first, writing from memory, locking in emotionally, and allowing vulnerability to lead. One particular song, he says, “locked him in,” setting the tone for his upcoming work and reinforcing his direction as an artist.

Throughout the conversation, DaJunior reflects on loss, survival, and the pressure of being called a “voice of the youth.” He talks openly about motivation during low-number moments, dream collaborations, and the discipline behind taking his time instead of rushing releases in a fast-paced industry.

The episode also previews his upcoming tape, Coldest Heart Ever, a concept-driven project rooted in emotional endurance, grief, and resilience. It’s not about chasing trends—it’s about telling the truth, even when it hurts.

One quote from the episode captures his mindset perfectly:

“It only takes ONE person to feel it… and I’m cool.”

That belief fuels everything DaJunior is building—music that doesn’t beg for validation, but resonates deeply with those who need it most.
