Q: Would you make the same music if you lived elsewhere?
NJ: Southern Texas rap is a very distinctive kind of rap. Pimp C and UGK have been hugely influential, and growing up, listening to them has left their mark on me. With my Washburn, I incorporate a little Americana into the sound to give it a distinctive edge.
Q: Who else would you say influenced your sound?
NJ: Tupac, B.B. King, Jimmy Hendrix, Kevin Gates, and Future, to name a few. Their exploration of the blues, pushing the sound forward and reconfiguring it to suit them, speaks to me. I appreciate their production techniques, storytelling, and the way they express themselves without hesitation. As I continue to grow as an artist, I want to inspire others to create their musical styles.
Q: How do you approach songwriting?
NJ: I keep it complicated as it is a process. First, I book the studio, looking for beats. When I find the right one, I start with the vocal melody. The lyrics come later as I figure out what I want to say. I also incorporate live instrumentation as much as I can to add that extra sense of life, truly making it mine.
Q: Any producer or engineer who seems ideally suited to you?
NJ: 2phone Noah is probably my favorite producer and engineer. He gets my artistic vision and can balance all the elements to make them shine. The sound always feels pristine and perfect because he brings out the best of my vocals.
