The Grammy Awards are reportedly expanding their awards lineup for 2027, introducing five new categories as part of an ongoing effort to recognize a broader range of artists, genres, and musical communities.

For years, the Recording Academy has faced criticism over representation, category structure, and the visibility given to certain genres during the televised ceremony. Hip-hop fans in particular have often voiced concerns regarding nominations, winners, and the overall treatment of rap music within the awards process.

While debates surrounding the GRAMMYs continue, the organization has made several changes in recent years aimed at modernizing the awards and increasing inclusivity. The latest reported expansion appears to be another step in that direction.

According to reports, five new categories will be introduced ahead of the 2027 ceremony, covering a variety of musical styles that have continued to grow in popularity and cultural impact.

Reported New GRAMMY Categories for 2027

  • Best Traditional Country Album
  • Best Album Cover
  • Best Contemporary Folk Album
  • Best Traditional R&B Album
  • Best Asian Pop Performance

The addition of an Asian pop category is particularly notable, reflecting the global rise of Asian music markets and the increasing international influence of artists across multiple countries and languages. Likewise, the creation of a dedicated Traditional R&B category could provide greater recognition for artists preserving classic soul and rhythm-and-blues sounds.

The Contemporary Folk category expands opportunities for singer-songwriters and independent artists working within modern folk traditions, while Best Album Cover highlights the visual artistry that often plays a crucial role in an album’s identity and marketing.

These additions also continue a long-running trend of the Recording Academy adjusting its categories to reflect changes in the music industry. As listening habits evolve and genres become more globally interconnected, the GRAMMYs have faced increasing pressure to ensure their awards accurately represent the modern musical landscape.

For many observers, the changes are a positive sign that the Academy is listening to feedback from artists and fans alike. However, discussions about representation—particularly concerning hip-hop and other historically overlooked genres—are likely to continue.

With the 2027 awards season still months away, it remains to be seen how these new categories will impact nominations and recognition across the industry. What is clear, however, is that the GRAMMYs are continuing to evolve in an effort to better reflect the diversity of today’s music scene.
