Pras Michel of the legendary group Fugees has undergone emergency surgery after being diagnosed with colon cancer, forcing a delay in his sentencing on federal conspiracy charges.
His legal team confirmed the news, saying Pras was unable to attend his scheduled hearing due to surgery and is now focused on recovery. The rapper’s sentencing, originally slated for last month, has been rescheduled for October 3.
Pras faces up to 22 years in prison after being convicted of conspiracy, including failing to register as an agent of China. Prosecutors are also pursuing nearly $65 million in forfeitures, alleging he accepted more than $100 million from Malaysian financier Jho Low to sway U.S. officials regarding the 1MDB scandal and to lobby for the extradition of a Chinese national.
According to reports, Donald Trump is considering commuting Pras’ sentence. The two have history — Trump even appeared on Pras’ 1998 debut album Ghetto Supastar in a voicemail interlude wishing him success.
For now, Pras’ team says they remain optimistic while he battles both serious health challenges and ongoing legal troubles.
