J. Cole continues to build momentum ahead of the long-awaited release of The Fall-Off, and he’s giving fans more than just music to digest. Just days before the album arrives, Cole took to Instagram to unveil a second official cover—along with a deeply personal story behind it.

In his post, Cole explained that the original cover art currently circulating comes from a photo he took himself at just 15 years old using a disposable camera. The image features his very first beat machine, marking the moment he truly began his journey into music.

He went on to recall the first song he ever created on that setup, a track he titled “The Storm.” Describing the experience, Cole said he spent hours locked in, writing and rapping the song repeatedly, overwhelmed by the feeling that he had created something special for the first time.

That early inspiration eventually led him to record the song properly at Bomm Sheltuh’s studio—a memory Cole says is permanently etched into his mind. He likened the feeling of recording music at that level to a spiritual experience, describing it as being briefly let into heaven, with a creative high that lingered long after the session ended. According to Cole, that feeling is what artists spend their lives chasing every time they sit down to write.

While Cole emphasized how much he still loves the original cover—and noted it’s been the album’s visual identity for the past seven years—he explained that things shifted creatively in recent years. Re-inspired, he said the project gradually evolved into a double-disc album, expanding the scope and concept of The Fall-Off.

Because of that growth, the Dreamville founder felt the album needed an additional visual representation—one just as powerful as the first, but centered on him in the present moment. He wanted something that would allow future him to look back and remember exactly who he was when he finally released the project he spent so many years building.

“This is that cover,” Cole wrote, confirming that the newly revealed artwork is now available for CD pre-order through the album’s official website. Fittingly, the CD is priced at $26, a deliberate nod to The Fall-Off’s release date: February 6, 2026.

With the album just days away, Cole’s reflections—and now his evolving artwork—have fans even more locked in for what promises to be one of the most significant releases of his career.
