With Grammy nominations and one of the year’s standout albums, TDE’s Doechii is cementing herself as one of music’s most compelling new artists. But her latest project reveals a deeper layer of vulnerability. In a new installment of Genius’ acclaimed Open Mic series, the “Alter Ego” rapper teamed up with Emmy-nominated actress and Insecure creator Issa Rae for a groundbreaking performance.

The unique collaboration unfolds like a one-act play, with Rae playing Doechii’s therapist in a staged session that blends introspection with artistry. Doechii’s raw delivery and Rae’s composed presence have drawn widespread praise for their emotional depth and innovative approach.

Genius producer Andrés Tardio shared the backstory on social media. “One day, while listening to Doechii’s ‘Denial Is A River,’ I had this wild idea,” he wrote on X. “What if Issa Rae took on the role of Doechii’s therapist in a live version of the song? That idea is now a reality, thanks to their unmatched talent and charisma. Watching these two create magic together was incredible.”

The performance highlights Doechii’s willingness to push artistic boundaries. “Denial Is A River” is a track from her Grammy-nominated mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, a project that received critical acclaim and led to a nationwide tour. This latest Open Mic performance follows Doechii’s celebrated debut on NPR’s Tiny Desk.

Doechii, who joined TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment) in 2022, is part of a star-studded roster that includes SZA, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, and Jay Rock. Earlier this year, she collaborated with Tyler, The Creator, on the Chromokopia track “Balloon.” Kendrick Lamar, a former TDE artist, has also praised her, calling her his “favorite new artist” over the summer.

Tardio teased a post-performance surprise, hinting that Doechii may join Lamar and SZA on their upcoming tour for Lamar’s GNX album. Meanwhile, Issa Rae, who brought her signature depth to the performance, has two new projects in development as a producer, according to IMDb.
