Hip-hop commentator DJ Akademiks has sparked fresh debate after suggesting that many of Drake‘s most high-profile rap battles ultimately trace back to Jay-Z.
The comments come as tensions between Drake and Jay-Z continue to dominate conversation following lyrical exchanges on Drake’s latest album, ICEMAN, and Jay-Z’s recent freestyle at the Roots Picnic.
During a recent livestream, Akademiks argued that Jay-Z has long been the central figure behind many of Drake’s biggest rivalries. In a clip later shared by DJ Akademiks TV, the media personality claimed that several artists who have feuded with Drake were effectively acting under Jay-Z’s influence.
Among the names Akademiks mentioned were Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, and Meek Mill. He characterized those artists as secondary players in what he believes has always been a larger rivalry between Drake and Jay-Z.
It’s important to note that Akademiks offered his personal opinion and did not provide evidence to support the broader claim that Jay-Z orchestrated or directed those disputes.
The remarks arrive after fans pointed to several songs on ICEMAN—including Janice STFU and Whisper My Name—as containing references aimed at Jay-Z. Those tracks reignited speculation about the relationship between two artists whose history has included collaborations, mutual respect, competitive moments, and occasional lyrical jabs over the years.
Akademiks’ theory, however, extends well beyond the current exchange, suggesting that Drake’s long-running conflicts should be viewed through the lens of his relationship with Jay-Z rather than as isolated feuds.
Whether fans agree with that assessment remains another matter.
While Drake has famously exchanged diss records with Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, and Meek Mill over the years, he has also had public disagreements with artists such as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Sauce Walka.
