Single Review: Soulful pop star Lisa Ramey brushes off bad romance on new track ‘Internet’

Lisa Ramey, who made a name for herself as one of the stars of The Voice, has returned with a track aiming at our fondness for phones – and lack of respect for each other.

Pop singer Lisa Ramey has returned with her blisteringly brilliant new track, ‘Internet,’ as she continues to be a beacon of musical light in an ever-darker world.

Ramey became a household name following her appearance on Season 16 of The Voice in 2019, where she was part of Team Legend and gave some of the show’s most electrifying performances. Her post-Voice career has seen her move in some thrilling – and unexpected – directions. In the last few years alone, she has done everything from touring the Far East with Cirque Du Soleil and performing on main stage Broadway…

After the lockdown first took effect in 2020, Lisa Ramey emerged as one of those irrepressible music stars who decided that she wouldn’t let a pandemic stop them from performing. She began live-streaming her gigs for her online fanbase, allowing thousands of people to hear her singularly gritty but soulful voice at every opportunity.

In amongst her performing and touring in recent years, Lisa has also found time to release two studio albums. The first, Surrender, came out in 2020.

Lisa’s second album, Broken Smile, was released earlier in 2023. This unique and breathtaking record re-imagines the songs and words of civil rights activist Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer. It’s packed with joyous, righteous social justice messages – wrapped up and delivered as catchy pop songs.

In Lisa’s new single, ‘Internet,’ the singer-songwriter highlights a problem that many couples will know well – that of individuals who spend just too much time online. The song sees Ramey, confident as ever, shaking off a romantic interest who is more interested in the blue-green glow of a screen than he is with her…

Speaking the song, Lisa says that ‘The Internet’s message was about aiming how video game culture has become a worrying, addictive trend for many people in relationships. “Video games are incredible,” she says, “I find that even I will put on VR and be entranced for hours before I enter back into the real world.” But she stresses that this can ultimately bring us down a darker path, socially, as well as romantically. “I don’t even have to talk about how much we can hang out on our phones. We have the world in our pockets. There’s so much to discover, to learn, and to be entertained by. How am I supposed to compete with all the fun?”

The answer, at least in the song itself, is for Lisa to say goodbye to all that and find value in herself, even if her partner doesn’t value her. “Bye, bye/Bye, bye/Hope you find love with the internet” is her tongue-in-cheek message in the song’s bridge.

It’s their loss. Because who in the world could undervalue Lisa’s star power?
